How painful is physiotherapy?

Updated: May 25

The level of pain experienced during physiotherapy can vary depending on a variety of factors, including the individual's condition, the type of treatment being administered and the individual's pain tolerance. The severity of pain that an individual experiences while undergoing physiotherapy treatment is determined by many factors such as their overall health and age.

Physiotherapy is designed to alleviate pain and discomfort, rather than causing it. However, certain treatments, such as massage or stretching, may cause some temporary discomfort or soreness as the body adjusts to new movements or exercises.

Physiotherapy treatment should not be excessively painful, and any discomfort should be manageable and temporary. It is important to communicate with your physiotherapist about any pain or discomfort you may experience during treatment, so they can adjust the treatment plan accordingly. They can also provide you with techniques to manage any pain or discomfort you may experience outside of the therapy session.
